Green Industry???

It used to be that the term “Green Industry” referred to those of us who are involved in the landscape – nursery growers, landscape contractors, landscape architects, landscape maintenance contractors, landscape irrigation contractors, etc.  Now, the field is much larger.  A posting today from Building Design+Construction notes an abundance of terms that relate to the much broader definition of companies seeking to embrace the concept of sustainability.  Rather than continuing to deplete natural resources, these companies are seeking innovative ways to incorporate smart thinking, eliminate waste, and are finding big payoffs in terms of energy savings and greater efficiencies.

So here is the question:  how are we who have been in the “Green Industry” for a long time going to weigh-in on this new tsunami?

It involves much more than mere “greenwashing” i.e. jumping on the bandwagon and espousing how “environmentally-friendly” we are.  For me, one of the most fascinating elements of the new emphasis on thinking about “ecological economics” is that fact that there IS a payoff to be realized.  Capitalism isn’t the enemy!  So, here’s a hint – Follow the money (find how various initiatives affect the bottom line, and pursue the payoffs).  That’s just good business.
